A song, if it is really great, may eventually get covered by an artist and generate royalties for me and my possible descendants for seventy five years after my death; and if it is even greater than that, it will probably languish in obscurity, but hopefully will lighten the hearts of a few folks sung around late night fires at festivals. A software program, after slogging through design reviews and the tantrums of fellow programmers, may eventually get to market as a product, if the platform stays stable, Microsoft doesn't release a version the week before and investors like the style of your eyeglasses the morning of your presentation. Then it may survive a year or more before being swamped by competitors jumping on your really good idea and avoiding all the mistakes you made the first time around. Sadly, the vast majority of software written never ever gets used by anybody. And don't let's talk software patents, please. So much for "durability."
