I consult in a field of software technology known as software reuse: which is, briefly, about trying to change the way large software systems get developed. The custom software field-- not the software packages on your Mac or PC, but the large, special-purpose systems that drive the big companies, about 80% of the software written-- still works a lot like 19th century handicraft. Systems are all too often built from scratch, even if very similar systems have been built before at the same company. Of course, individual programmers do reuse from project to project, informally sharing a kind of folklore (or what I call "techlore"). People in my field are trying to find ways of better supporting these software "traditions".
