I'm a stickler for rhyme, I have to admit. I've got in feuds with co-writers about these things. "ime" and "ine" don't rhyme in my book. "ake" and "akes" don't rhyme. This doesn't mean you can't use these effects well in songs; but they are different effects. To me a pure rhyme has an "in the pocket" satisfaction that I love.

But I've been learning what a doomed and Quixotic stance this is to take in the world of modern song-writing. So now I think in terms of pure, near, and non-rhyming. And my main rule is that you should not unintentionally break expectations. So if I've written a song using almost all pure rhyme I won't throw in a couple of lines of near rhyme just cause I got lazy. On the other hand, I now recognize that near rhyme is stylistically part of some genres. Oh well.
